Worker dies at Fukushima plant

The operator of Japan’s tsunami-wrecked nuclear power plant said a contract worker in his 60s died on Saturday after collapsing at the facility’s waste disposal building, adding that his body showed no signs of dangerous levels of radioactivity.The man was carrying equipment at the Fukushima Dai-ichi nuclear plant when he collapsed. He died later in hospital, said Tokyo Electric Power Co. spokesman Naoyuki Matsumoto.

Nuclear reactor in central Japan closes down

The Hamaoka nuclear power plant in central Japan closed its last running reactor on Saturday, after the March quake left another plant in the north-east leaking radioactive material, its operator said.Chubu Electric Co shut reactor five on Saturday amid concerns over its location near a fault line in Shizuoka prefecture.

Earthquake rocks Kashmir Valley

An earthquake of 4.9 magnitude today shook the Kashmir Valley but there were no reports of any loss in the tremor, officials said here.The moderate intensity tremor, which was recorded at 3.09 am this morning, had its epicentre in Hindukush mountain range in Afghanistan, Coordinator of Disaster Management Cell Aamir Ali said.

Adarsh: Files go missing from MOEF, Delhi office too

Some more files pertaining to the controversial Adarsh Housing Society here have gone missing, this time from the Union Ministry of Environment and Forests in New Delhi, a senior CBI official said today.“Files which include letters issued by the Environment Ministry to the State government regarding Coastal Regulation Zone norms, and asking the society to approach the appropriate State government department for clearance, have gone missing,” the official said.

Scientists have developed what they claim is a 15-minute online test which can help detect the early signs of Alzheimer’s disease.A team at Oxford University has developed the online quiz called the Cognitive Function Test which it claims could help diagnose the most common form of dementia perhaps years earlier than it might normally be spotted.

BJP gains, Congress suffers losses in by-polls

The Bharatiya Janata Party gained three Assembly seats and one Lok Sabha seat in the recent by-elections, results of which were announced on Friday.It was a major loss for the Congress as it lost one Assembly seat each in Karnataka, Andhra Pradesh and Nagaland, besides the Kadapa Lok Sabha seat in Andhra Pradesh.Y.S. PM announces measures for development of Afghanistan

The Prime Minister Dr. Manmohan Singh today announced a slew of measures to assist in Afghanistan's reconstruction efforts. These include Small Development Projects across Afghan provinces to further facilitate development at the grassroots with the involvement of local communities in areas of Health, Education and Agriculture. Addressing a joint session of the Afghan Parliament in Kabul, Dr. Singh said India and Afghanistan face similar development challenges.

New facility at MIT with $1 million grant from Lord Paul

A new facility for students and faculty of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), Boston, built with a one million-dollar grant from Labour peer Swraj Paul, was opened on Friday and will be the new home for its School of Management.The grant was made through the Ambika Paul Foundation, set up by Lord Paul in 1978 in memory of his daughter Ambika who died of leukaemia in 1968 at the age of four.

Russia warns West on Syria

India today signed a Double Taxation Avoidance Agreement (DTAA) with the Republic of Colombia for the avoidance of double taxation and for the prevention of fiscal evasion with respect to taxes on income. The Agreement was signed by Shri Sudhir Chandra, Chairman, Central Board of Direct Taxes on behalf of the Government of India and by Mr. Juan Alfredo Pinto Saavedra, Ambassador of the Republic of Colombia to India, on behalf of the Republic of Colombia.
