The Bharatiya Janata Party gained three Assembly seats and one Lok Sabha seat in the recent by-elections, results of which were announced on Friday.It was a major loss for the Congress as it lost one Assembly seat each in Karnataka, Andhra Pradesh and Nagaland, besides the Kadapa Lok Sabha seat in Andhra Pradesh.Y.S. Jaganmohan Reddy (son of the former Chief Minister Y.S. Rajasekhara Reddy) and his mother Y.S. Vijayamma won respectively from the Kadapa Lok Sabha and Pulivendula Assembly seats in Andhra Pradesh for the YSR Congress Party. They had vacated the seats after resigning from the Congress and forming their own party.
The BJP retained the Bastar Lok Sabha seat (in Chhattisgarh) with its candidate Dinesh Kashyap defeating nearest rival Lakhma Kawasi (Congress) by over 85,000 votes. The Bastar seat was held by Mr. Dinesh's father Baliram Kashyap, whose death caused the election.
Mr. Jaganmohan Reddy secured 6,92,079 votes against Congress candidate and Minister D.N. Ravindra Reddy's 1,46,577 votes in Kadapa. Ms. Vijayamma got 1,10,098 votes to beat Congress nominee and her brother-in-law Vivekananda Reddy, who managed just 28,725 votes.
In Nagaland, former Chief Minister and Congress candidate S.C. Jamir was defeated in the Aaonglenden Assembly seat by the ruling Naga People's Front (NPF) candidate Toshikopba Longkumer by over 1,300 votes.
In Karnataka, BJP candidate C.P. Yogeshwar wrested the Chennapatna seat by 12,000 votes from the JD(S) which fielded S.L. Nagaraj.In Jagalur (ST) constituency, BJP's S.V. Ramachandra defeated H.P. Rajesh (Independent and BJP rebel) by 4,433 votes. In Bangarpet (SC) constituency, M. Naryanaswamy of the BJP defeated K.M. Naryanaswamy of the Congress by 4,044 votes.
In Uttar Pradesh, Samajwadi Party candidate Rajmati Nishad defeated her nearest rival Jitendra (Independent) in Pipraich Assembly by-election by a margin of 26,683 votes.
