The Prime Minister Dr. Manmohan Singh today announced a slew of measures to assist in Afghanistan's reconstruction efforts. These include Small Development Projects across Afghan provinces to further facilitate development at the grassroots with the involvement of local communities in areas of Health, Education and Agriculture. Addressing a joint session of the Afghan Parliament in Kabul, Dr. Singh said India and Afghanistan face similar development challenges.
The Prime Minister had announced an additional 500 million dollar aid for various developmental projects in the war-torn nation that would take the total Indian aid to Afghanistan to 2 billion US dollars.Dr. Singh said in his address, heard with rapt attention by Afghan President Hamid Karzai and Parliamentarians that India is ready to partner the Afghan people as they rebuild their country in accordance with their own priorities and national circumstances. He said India will provide more scholarships for Afghan students to study in India, donate tractors to farmers and provide buses for Kabul and other municipalities in Afghanistan.
