Prime Minister Manmohan Singh left for home this afternoon at the end of his six-day two-nation tour of Ethiopia and Tanzania. During his visit Dr. Singh announced a number of plans to give a further boost to ties between India and resurgent Africa. Tanzanian President Jakaya Mrisho Kikwete along with his senior colleagues gave a warm send-off to Dr Singh who described his visit very satisfactory and fruitful. During the tour, Dr Singh attended the second India-Africa summit at Addis Ababa in Ethiopia and interacted with a number of African leaders to cement India's ties the mineral-rich continent.
Speaking at the banquet hosted by the Tanzanian President at Dar-es-salam, Prime Minister said India and Tanzania as two leading democracies should aim to build a broad and ambitious relationship that can serve as a model of cooperation among developing countries.
He said both countries face the common challenges of accelerating economic development and of ensuring that its fruits reach the most disadvantaged sections. Pointing out that India and Tanzania should work together for international peace and stability, the Prime Minister said steps should be in place to ensure that the fruits of globalisation are shared equitably. He said both countries should make common cause to ensure that global governance is just and meets the aspirations of the developing world.
Later launching the Dar-es-Salaam Institute of Technology, the Prime Minister said India was ready to provide all the help to enable Tanzania to create a pool of world-class IT professionals. He said India is ready to work in capacity building and welcomed more Tanzanian students to come to India to study, to train and to build up their expertise.
