The World Health Organisation (WHO) today said it will assist India in its study to check the presence of multi-drug resistant superbug and whether it is a health hazard. “We will be assisting Indian government in the research on whether the superbug is a health threat or not,” Nata Menabde, WHO Country Representative, said. Menabe said one has to confront science through science. “Whether or not it’s a public heath threat needs to be established through research,” she said.
The study comes in the backdrop of reputed medical journal Lancet publishing a research paper that that NDM-1 (New Delhi Metallo-beta-lactamase-1), a bacteria with multi-drug resistant gene, was found in sewage and drinking water samples in the capital.
In the wake of the Lancet report, Delhi government has decided to distribute free chlorine tablets to people as a precautionary measure against water-borne diseases but insisted the water being supplied is totally safe.
The study would be jointly conducted by the Union Health Ministry and a special task force, which has been set up for the purpose. Project coordinator and the surveillance team set up for the purpose in the selected tertiary care hospitals will implement the surveillance of antimicrobials.The data generated will be used for intervention studies for rational use of antibiotics.
