Sports Minister Visits Stadia to Oversee Registration Process Under “Come and Play Scheme” - 924 Applications Received on First Day

Shri Ajay Makan, Union Minister of State (I/C) for Youth Affairs and Sports, visited stadia of Sports Authority of India (SAI) here today to oversee the registration of public under “Come and Play Scheme”. The registration process under the scheme started today in all the stadia, namely, Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium, Dr. Karni Singh Shooting Ranges, Dr. Shyama Prasad Mukherjee Swimming Pool Complex, Major Dhyan Chand Hockey Stadium, Indira Gandhi Indoor Stadium, K.D. Jadhav Wrestling Stadium and Cycling Velodrome.

Under the Scheme unveiled by Sports Minister on 15th April, 2011, it was envisaged of opening of SAI stadia in the city for usage by school children, students, sports persons as also the common people. The designated area in the stadia will be thrown open for imparting professional training to the establishment sports persons and also to beginners with the twin objective of encouraging participation in sports as also optimum utilization of the stadia.

On the first day, 924 applications have been received for registration under the scheme. Out of this, 425 applications were received in Major Dhyan Chand National Stadium, 231 application in Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium, 150 applications in Dr. Shyama Prasad Mukerjee Swimming Pool Complex, 106 application in Indira Gandhi Stadium and 12 applications in Dr. Karni Singh Shooting Range.

During the visit to the above stadia, the Sports Minister interacted with the students who thronged in large number for getting themselves registered under the Scheme. Shri Maken directed the SAI officials to make adequate arrangements for first-aid and drinking water and proper signages before the starts of coaching session.
