Pradhan Mantri Swasthya Suraksha Yojana

The Pradhan Mantri Swasthya Suraksha Yojana (PMSSY) aims at correcting the imbalances in the availability of affordable healthcare facilities in the different parts of the country in general, and augmenting facilities for quality medical education in the under-served States in particular. The scheme was approved in March 2006.The first phase in the PMSSY has two components - setting up of six institutions in the line of AIIMS; and upgradation of 13 existing Government medical college institutions.

Medical institutions have to strive towards bridging the growing gap between healthcare demand and supply, N. Ram, Editor-in-Chief of The Hindu said on Sunday.Inaugurating the vitreo retinal symposium “Reticon” hosted by Dr. Agarwal's Retina Foundation, Mr. Ram said institutions should also focus on the needs of the people, especially the deprived sections of society.He urged institutions not to lose sight of the fact that science and technology were for the people.
