Govt to assess whether economic growth is hurting environment

NCT:Amid a debate over economic growth verses environment, the government has decided to conduct an assessment of the impact of GDP growth on ecology using Green Accounting System and the process will be completed by 2015.The government will soon set up of an expert group headed by environmental economist Partha Dasgupta to provide a road map for Green National Accounting (GNA) system to evaluate impact of economic growth on environment by 2015, Environment Minister Jairam Ramesh told reporters here on Monday.

7 Asian economies to account for 45% of global GDP by 2050: ADB

The engines of Asia's re-emergence - India, China and five other economies - will account for 45 per cent of the global GDP by 2050, a report by the Asian Development Bank (ADB) today predicted."Asia's rise will be led by China, India, Indonesia, Japan, the Republic of Korea, Malaysia, and Thailand," the ADB's report, 'Asia 2050 - Realizing the Asian Century', said.

Inflation hurting the growth process - Continuing uncertainty about energy and commodity prices may vitiate the investment climate

Inflation is a subject for discussion in the last several months. Even though taming rising inflation and inflationary pressures are concerns of the Reserve Bank of India (RBI), inadequate fiscal measures would derail the goals of the central bank. It is for sure that the forthcoming Annual Policy 2011-12, which would be announced by the RBI in the first week of May, would seriously discuss the issue of inflation.

Poverty shows declining trend since 2004-05; Planning Commission says that India aims to achieve 9.5 per cent growth in 12th plan

Deputy Chairman of the Planning Commission Montek Singh Ahluwalia said poverty has shown a declining trend from 2004-05 as per the preliminary data available with the Commission. Speaking in New Delhi yesterday, he said the  Commission has considered the Tendulkar Committee recommendations which had suggested that poverty should be estimated on the basis of consumption based on cost of living index instead of caloric intake. Mr. Ahluwalia said that in every area, there has been progress.

12th Plan to target 9-9.5 pc GDP: Montek Singh Ahluwalia

Raising doubts over feasibility of achieving 10 per cent average economic expansion in the 12th Plan (2012-17), Plan Commission Deputy Chairman Montek Singh Ahluwalia said the next plan would target GDP growth of 9 to 9.5 per cent in the next five years. 'If you ask me personally, I think setting target of 10 per cent (GDP growth) as an average for 12th Plan, is not feasible.it would be somewhere between 9 to 9.5 in next Plan period," he told reporters ahead of the meeting of the full Planning Commission. Prime Minister Manmohan Singh wants the Commission to aim at higher growth target for 10 per cent during the 12th Plan, as against 8.2 per cent estimated in the current plan.
