Kerala governement ‘Likes’ Netizen Police on FB

It seems the State government ‘Likes’ Netizen Police, a group on the Facebook.The group in the social networking site has become a movement strong enough to make the State Government take notice of it. The group has many stories of online frauds and cyber crimes that the State Government is now actively following them up.“Reports on the basis of complaints lodged at the group are being prepared, which will be forwarded to the cyber cell. Cases will be registered against those found committing online crimes,” Minister for Home Thiruvanchoor Radhakrishnan told The Hindu.

Chinese military sets up special cyber warfare unit

The People’s Liberation Army (PLA), of China has formed a special cyber warfare unit called Blue Team, to safeguard the Internet security of the military, Chinese Defence Ministry has said.It is important for the military to strengthen its defence capabilities against internet attacks, Defence Ministry spokesman Geng Yansheng has been quoted as saying in the official media here today.“China is a victim of cyber attacks. Cyber attacks have become an international problem affecting both civilian and military areas. China is relatively weak in cyber security and has often been targeted. This temporary programme is aimed at improving our defences against such attacks,” Geng said. He added that it was only a training programme based on their needs and warning others not to exaggerate the issue.

Netizens urged caution while searching Osama stuff

Netizens searching for news and pictures related to al-Qaeda chief Osama bin Laden have been cautioned by cyber experts to beware as their accounts could be hacked or spams could harm their computers. Those active in social networking sites such as Facebook and Twitter are particularly vulnerable.For instance, Internet security firm McAfee has pointed out that with the news of bin Laden being dead, spam e-mails with videos disapproving of his possible killing are doing the rounds in cyberspace. These e-mails lure users into clicking the link which are then directed to a site that downloads a small file onto your system.

Beware! now, it is vishing


After phishing cases, in which credit card details of the victims are obtained by the fraudsters over email, it is vishing, where such information is gathered over phone that has come to light in the city. The Chennai police is probing three vishing cases, in which the victims were cheated of over Rs.1.5 lakh. The complaints were lodged with the Central Crime Branch in February and March. According to CCB sources, the fraudsters managed to obtain the onetime password (OTP), issued by the bank, from the victims over phone. The Cyber Crime Cell of the CCB, which has been handling phishing cases for many years, has also been entrusted with the vishing (derived from the combination of voice and phishing) cases.
